GMA 30｜Why Jolin's Ugly Beauty Is Album Of The Year

Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai was the biggest winner at the 30th Golden Melody Awards (GMAs), the Grammys of the Chinese music world. Last night, Tsai took home two major awards for《Ugly Beauty》— Album of The Year and Song Of The Year for Womxnly.

Receiving the award onstage at the Taipei Arena, a visibly emotional Jolin said: "This is the album which I spent the most time getting to know myself."

"As a woman, when you have a voice and you want to speak your mind, you've got to be brave — speak up and make bold decisions. This album helped me find my authentic self."

《Ugly Beauty》 was chosen as the Album of The Year by a judging panel after two rounds of voting.

After the ceremony backstage, panellist head Sandee Chan shared with reporters: "Taiwan has experienced a series of sorrowful events in the past year. But Jolin's Ugly Beauty managed to lighten the gloomy atmosphere in a lighthearted way."

There was much thought put into the Song of The Year,Womxnly.

Womxnly is based on a real-life tragedy of Yeh Yung Chih, a teenage boy who was allegedly bullied in school for his effeminate behaviour. In 2000, the 15-year-old student was found dead in the school's bathroom.

After receiving the award and a hug from celeb pal A-Shin onstage, Jolin said: "Yeh Yung Chih is a reminder to myself that I could become a minority. So I have to be empathetic towards others. This song is dedicated to him and anyone who doesn't have a choice."

"Remember you've got to choose yourself, support yourself."
